Classic Recording Techniques for a High Resolution Future
Doug Fearn and the Hazelrigg Brothers discuss classic recording techniques using ribbon microphones and vacuum tube mic preamps using a minimal number of mics to record a jazz trio directly to DSD. Learn the history of ribbon microphones and the Blumlein configuration for stereo recording. The event was organized by the Boston AES and hosted by Futura Productions.

Single-mic vs Multi-mic and DSD vs PCM recording. We record Tommy McIntyre using a single AEA R88 microphone direct to a Tascam DA-3000 DSD recorder, with a simultaneous multi-mic recording to PCM 24-bit, 92kHz.

The “Recording In Improvised Spaces” series focuses on the home studio, particularly for the recordist who has to make-do with space at home that is needed for other purposes as well as recording. It is illustrated with actual recording sessions from the D.W. Fearn shop.
